Health officials say the spike is driven by a highly contagious new subvariant.
For the first time since January, New York has reported over 10,000 cases of COVID-19.
On Long Island, the seven-day average of cases is at 9.84%.
Doctors say the best way to protect yourself is to get vaccinated and boosted.
