A Long Beach couple is accused of running a nightclub in the basement of their home, apparently to fund their daughter?s beauty pageant career.
Police say Joseph Naraine and his wife charged admission to their parties, sold drinks and had a DJ. Long Beach officials hit the Naraines with 13 violations.
?There were 30 people in a basement, with a disc jockey, with a buffet dinner set out,? Long Beach City Manager Charles Theofan says. ?People were being charged admission to get in. There were 20 people outside.?
Joseph Naraine admitted to throwing the parties, but says they were held to raise money for his 13-year-old daughter to compete in beauty pageants.
?It's a fundraiser for my daughter, and that's it, but they're trying to make it look like some big crime,? Naraine says.
Theofan says he?s taking the matter seriously because the Naraines created a fire hazard in their home.
Joseph Naraine says he will continue to focus on getting his daughter to the next Miss Panama pageant.
