Town of Islip Councilwoman Trish Bergin Weichbrodt spoke out Thursday against a proposal to raise Islip Town Board salaries automatically each year.
She said the $78,000 she makes a year in her position is enough, and that a raise would be unfair to residents and other town workers.
"We have senior citizens who cannot pay for their medications, and nurses and firefighters who save lives for a living, and they don't make this kind of money so this all needs to end," she said.
The raise would be an automatic annual cost of living salary increase capped at 4 percent. Bergin Weichbrodt said the increase is the equivalent of an extra $2,000 a year.
She said she will forfeit her raise if salary increases are approved in a vote next Tuesday.
