A Medford man is accused of driving the wrong way on the Long Island Expressway for six exits, and police say he was drunk when he did it.
Authorities say 51-year-old Steven Brill got on the Expressway at exit 64 and traveled westbound in the eastbound HOV lane until exit 58 for Old Nichols Road.
Police say they were tipped off to the situation by 911 callers. Officers caught up with Brill shortly after 2:30 a.m. and noticed he smelled of alcohol. They say his speech was also slurred.
Brill refused a Breathalyzer test. He was arrested on DWI and reckless driving charges, and was arraigned this afternoon in a Central Islip courtroom.
Brill's neighbor tells News 12 that she was shocked and saddened to hear of the arrest, and adds that he and his wife are "wonderful people."
