A woman is in grave condition on life support Thursday after police say her boyfriend severely beat her.
Officials say they were called to Grove Avenue in Patchogue at around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and found 39-year-old Stacey Mays with severe head injuries. Police later arrested Mays' boyfriend, 30-year-old Oscar Antonio Matamoros.
Police say a confrontation between Matamoros and Mays escalated Tuesday night when he thought she was seeing someone else. They say he assaulted her in a shed behind a building off Grove Avenue.
Matamoros punched Mays in the face, shook her and slammed her into a ladder, according to police. They also say he left her there and didn?t return until the next morning. Matamoros? attorney denies the allegations.
Residents say the area where Mays? body was found is frequented by homeless individuals. A representative from the Oasis Christian Center says the couple was homeless and addicted to drugs and alcohol.
Prosecutors say Matamoros is an illegal immigrant from El Salvador. He is being held on $1 million bail.
