The Bay Shore man convicted of molesting and imprisoning a 9-year-old girl more than a decade ago has disappeared, police said Wednesday.
Sal Inghilleri, 54, served 12 years for crimes committed against Katie Beers in 1994. He was released in 2006.
As a convicted sex offender, Inghilleri is required by state law to notify police of his whereabouts within 10 days of any move. Suffolk police said he has not done that since May.
"We are not 100 percent sure right now [where Inghilleri is]," Det. Sgt. Gene Bragoli said. "We do have information he is up on Long Island."
According to police, Inghilleri last registered while living at a Bay Shore motel in May. Before that, police said he lived at a different motel in Bay Shore, one in West Babylon and with his wife in Uniondale.
Bragoli said investigators tracked Inghilleri to an out-of-state address recently and convinced him to return to Long Island.
"We had reason to believe last week he was going to surrender himself, which he did not do for some unknown reason," Bragoli said.
Laura Ahearn, from the Parents for Meghan's Law child-protection group, said this is a perfect example of why the sex offender registry laws need to be strengthened.
"The sex offender registrations are done on the honor system and we need lifetime supervisions to prevent this from happening," Ahearn said.
Individuals with information on Inghilleri's whereabouts are asked to contact Suffolk Crime Stoppers at (800) 220-TIPS.
