A homeless man is accused of driving drunk in a stolen vehicle and crashing into several other cars last night.

Police say Ievgen Kovtun, 28, was drunk when he stole a red Suburban and crashed into several unoccupied cars on North Sixth Street in Lindenhurst.

The incident happened at around 11:30 p.m. Friday.

Paul Vinciguerra, assistant chief of the Lindenhurst Fire Department, lives on North Sixth Street, where the incident took place. Vinciguerra says he was driving home from work and witnessed the crash.

"By the time I realized what was going on, he ran a stop sign and then hit all these parked cars in front of my house," Vinciguerra said. He said he witnessed the car Kovtun was driving go up on its end, roll three or four times, and hitting approximately four cars. He said one car was totaled.

Kovtun was treated for minor injuries at a hospital. He is being charged with DWI and criminal possession of stolen property.
