Police say five adults were arrested Thursday after seven Mastic Beach children were found living in animal filth.
Suffolk police arrested Bernadette, April, Krystal, Eamon and Richard Hall after they say the children were found living in the deplorable conditions. The children, who range in age between 2 and 13, were allegedly living with no heat or running water.
Officials from the Town of Brookhaven condemned the home on Locust Drive, which they say was covered in cat feces, garbage and rotten food. Suffolk police add that the home had no working toilets, so the occupants went to the bathroom on the floor. Suffolk County Deputy Inspector Mark Griffiths says the conditions posed an imminent health hazard to the children. Four sick cats were also found at the home.
According to authorities, someone in the children?s school district called in a tip to the Suffolk County Department of Social Services. That department forwarded the information to police. All five adults are facing child endangerment charges. Officials say the children are with Child Protective Services.
April and Eamon Hall pleaded not guilty to the charges and were ordered held on $2,500 bail. Their two sisters and father have not yet been arraigned.
Suffolk police say reports of child neglect are up five percent from the beginning of the year. They blame economy-related stress.
