A 22-year police veteran has been suspended without pay for allegedly tipping off day laborers that they were being watched by police.
Police say Sgt. Robert Wood told the day laborers that an unmarked car nearby belonged to an officer. However, an undercover cop was present in that group of men as part of a drug investigation.
"He had no idea of any undercover investigation or any investigation being conducted by the village whatsoever," said Wood's attorney, Ray Perini. "There's no criminality here."
Town Police Chief Todd Sarris said he doubts the sergeant knew that an investigation was underway, but tipping the men off was still wrong.
"I can't get into somebody's head and?figure out what he did, but certainly it was inappropriate and certainly very disturbing," said Sarris.
The Suffolk DA's office has taken over the criminal case, while sources say Wood has put in his retirement papers.
