A convicted rapist from Long Island is finally being brought to justice after more than four decades on the run.
Todd Matus allegedly jumped bail in the middle of his rape trial back in 1976. Matus was convicted on charges that he raped a young woman in a secluded wooded area in Dix Hills after he agreed to give the woman a ride home from a disco in North Babylon.
Suffolk Police Commissioner Timothy Sini says Matus was caught in Arizona when he fraudulently applied for Social Security benefits.
Matus lived on Woodstock Drive in Wheatley Heights in the 70s, according to police. Since then, they say he has been in Vermont, Nevada, Hawaii and Arizona, where he allegedly assumed another person’s identity.
Matus was 21 when he was convicted but will now serve his time at age 62. Police say Matus will serve his five to 15 years in prison for his rape and sodomy convictions after he faces his new charge of jumping bail.
