A number of consumer groups have filed privacy complaints with the Federal Trade Commission over "My Friend Cayla," a doll that can spell words, tell stories and play interactive games.
The allegations in the complaint claim the doll records kids' voices without sufficient permission and sends that information to a technology company. The collection of personal information from children is in violation of rules prohibiting unfair and deceptive practices.
Lance Ulanoff, from the tech website Mashable, says he doesn't think Genesis, the company that makes the doll, is seeking to do harm. He says more transparency is needed.
"I think it's more of carelessness, thoughtlessness and maybe too interested in making money on the other side," says Ulanoff. "There's probably little harm from these toys, but it's the idea that they're not protecting our privacy upfront."
News 12 attempted to contact Genesis but has not yet been able to reach anyone.
