A construction project that will eventually give City Island residents new sewers and water mains got underway Wednesday.

Carp Construction Corp. plans to take on one area at a time to cause as little inconvenience as possible to residents. Still, the Department of Design and Construction says there will be problems, such as discolored or disconnected water. Some roads and parking spaces will also be blocked.

The new lines are scheduled to be completed by the end of 2008.
