Pres. Barack Obama is scheduled to outline his plans for the new year in his State of the Union address Tuesday.
During his weekly address Saturday, the president said he will also call on the newly elected, GOP-controlled Congress to work together for the sake of the American people.
One of those new members, Democratic Rep. Kathleen Rice, says she is holding onto hope that the work can get done.
"I'm hoping that all Americans are going to hear the president's plan to address the needs of the middle class which is under attack, Too many people living paycheck to paycheck," she said.
In the GOP weekly address, newly elected Rep. Steve Russell, of Oklahoma, says while the 114th Congress has been hard at work already, the Obama Administration has largely ignored the concerns of the American people when it comes to the economy, spending, jobs and the nation's security.
"Republicans and Democrats both care, but we hold different views about the ability of the people to make a bright future, or whether the government should stand in your way and define that future for you," he said.
Newly elected Rep. Lee Zeldin will be headed to Capitol Hill for the address. Brookhaven Supervisor Ed Romaine, who Zeldin invited as his guest, will also head to Washington, D.C.
