The New York State Department of Health announced that a case of the chikungunya virus was found in Nassau County resident.
This is the first locally acquired case of the virus reported in New York state.
Chikungunya is transmitted by infected mosquitoes and mostly causes mild symptoms. The majority of people who get chikungunya recover without needing medical attention after one to two weeks.
The Nassau County Health Department says someone began experiencing symptoms in August.
A Long Island woman previously told tells News 12 she tested positive for chikungunya.
News 12 reached out to the Department of Health to see if these cases are related but did not hear back.
The woman who said she tested positive said she did not travel off Long Island and contracted the illness at the end of August.
No chikungunya virus has been detected in local mosquito pools to date, and the Nassau County Health Department says the risk to the general public continues to remain low.
