Officials in the East Islip School District have confirmed a case of MRSA.

Officials tell News 12 that a staff member at Ruth C. Kinney Elementary has a confirmed case of the bacterial staph infection that is resistant to most common forms of antibiotics.

The school posted a letter on its website this morning alerting parents and students. The staff member is now recovering at home.

The district says it has since sanitized classrooms and communal areas. Class was back in session at the elementary school this morning.

Parents who have children in the school district tell News 12 Long Island that it's a cause for concern, but Superintendent Linda Rozzi sent a letter to parents that sought to calm their fears. "Our children need to know that we are dealing with this situation proactively and they are safe," the letter read.

Doctors say thorough hand-washing and other sanitary practices can help prevent the spread of MRSA. Children who have open wounds should have them properly dressed and covered before they go to school.

As News 12 Long Island has reported, students at LIU Post and Farmingdale State College were also recently treated for MRSA.
