The Comsewogue school board will be voting next week on a resolution to consider not administering the state-standardized ELA and math exams in grades 3 through 8 or the science exam in grades 4 and 8.

The vote, which is expected on Monday night, would clarify where the district stands on the controversial standardized testing. Opt-out advocates are applauding the idea.

"It's big, because it really shows the direction we're headed on this," said Jeanette Deutermann, of Long Island Opt Out. "We see refusals expanding everywhere. We have districts already reporting they're up at 50 and 60 percent."

Lisa Shankman says she's already sent in refusal letters for her fourth- and seventh-graders in the Sachem School District.

"I just don't feel that it's necessary for my kids to be under such stress to have to perform well on a test that doesn't accurately reflect how they're doing or how their teachers are doing," Shankman told News 12.

A district upstate near Buffalo also has a similar resolution pending.
