A report released by the New York State Comptroller's Office says the average student in New York with college loans owes about $32,000.
In New York, student loan debt has more than doubled during the last decade.
According to the report, college students are paying double what they paid back in 2005, causing the uptick in student loans.
Leslie Tayne owns a law firm that helps clients negotiate debt. She says predatory lending is another reason why students leave college with big bills.
"Taking out student loans is really easy. You just sign on the dotted line...but it becomes a nightmare in your 30s and 40s when you are trying to pay back those loans," says Tayne.
