News 12 Long Island has learned that drones could soon be hitting the runway of Calverton.

Luminati Aerospace has acquired the land and buildings of a former skydiving school at the old Grumman test site.

Some residents are afraid that the Brooklyn aeronautical startup wants to build and launch unmanned aerial vehicles or drones out of the former facility. They say they don't want a fiery repeat of what happened Tuesday in Sag Harbor when a photography drone crashed, narrowly missing pedestrians. 

Luminati Aerospace declined to say if it's involved in a Facebook/Google project to build high-altitude solar-powered drones to distribute Internet signals back to Earth.

It says it plans to bring 40 to 50 high-tech jobs to Calverton, and eventually use the 10,000-foot runway to launch its unmanned vehicles.

The company is asking Riverhead for a 10-year lease of some of the property, including use of the existing runway.
