As Diwali celebrations begin worldwide, members of the Bronx community in Riverdale are preparing for the holiday with traditions that hold special meaning.
Diwali, known as the Festival of Lights, symbolizes the victory of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance. Bharati Sukul Kemraj, a community advocate, says it’s a time for Hindus to gather, clean their homes, decorate and spend quality time with loved ones.
At Neem Indian Cuisine, co-owner Anil Ahmed is preparing colorful food spreads with a variety of sweets, a holiday staple symbolizing life’s good moments. Ahmed describes Diwali as a celebration of new beginnings and positivity.
Each of Diwali’s five nights carries a unique tradition, from gift-giving to charity, fasting, and prayer.
For the community, the Festival of Lights offers a chance to bring brightness into their hearts and homes.
