Commissioner: Suffolk police shoot man wielding sword at Bay Shore home

Suffolk police officers shot a man who claimed to be holding hostages and advanced toward them with a sword at a Bay Shore home, Commissioner Kevin Catalina said at a news conference.
He said the incident began with a 911 call to the 3rd Precinct at 1:26 p.m. Catalina said their was a report of a man “with a history of mental illness, claiming to be holding hostages and threating violence and suicide.”
Officers knocked on 1625 Ohio Ave. and were met with a 33-year-old man with a large sword, he said. After instructing the man to drop it, he advanced toward them and unsheathed the sword, according to Catalina.
The unidentified man was Tasered but continued to advance. That’s when officers shot him, Catalina said.
The man was taken to South Shore University Hospital, where he is currently in surgery.
