In the wake of the Virginia Tech tragedy, Nassau BOCES administrators didn't take any chances when one student made a similar threat Wednesday.
Nassau Det. Lt. Kevin Smith said an 18-year-old Lawrence High School student threatened a Columbine High School-like event during a verbal dispute with a BOCES Career Preparatory High School student in Hicksville.
BOCES said it contacted the student's home district and his parents, who together decided to bring the teen to Nassau University Medical Center for a psychological evaluation. Police said the threat turned out to be baseless - the teen had no weapons or real intention in carrying it out.
BOCES officials said in a statement that the school takes responsibility for its students "very seriously."
"In any situation where a student exhibits signs of stress or expresses potential harm to himself or any other person, we immediately respond," the statement said.
The student who made the threat has not been charged with any crimes.
