The recent blast of cold weather can cause pipes to freeze and possibly burst, but there are ways to protect against it.
Bill Nason, of Roto-Rooter, says heat should be turned up during periods of high winds and low temperatures. The Red Cross says heat should be set no lower than 55 degrees.
"Don't save your oil, save your house," says Nason. "If a pipe burst, that could be tens of thousands [of dollars]...I can't even put a number on it."
The Red Cross says other tips to minimize the risk of getting frozen pipes is to keep the garage door closed if there are water supply lines in there. They also suggest keeping kitchen or bathroom cabinet doors open to let heat circulate.
