Upgraded charges were announced today in a crash that killed an 84-year-old Central Islip woman.
A grand jury indictment was handed down against Charles Koukalenios, charging him with aggravated vehicular homicide, manslaughter and DWI.
Prosecutors say the East Islip man was driving drunk earlier this month when he slammed into Mary Joy Rogalle's car on Carleton Avenue. They say his blood-alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit.
Rogalles, who was heading to church at the time of the crash, died a short while later.
Koukalenios' attorney says his client is remorseful about what happened. If found guilty, he could face up to 25 years in prison.
