Community members and leaders are questioning the charges brought against a former car dealership manager accused of pulling a gun on an employee.

As News 12 has reported, police were called to the auto dealership in Hempstead about two weeks ago. Employee Marc Jean says he was in a morning meeting when his manager Mike Volonakis allegedly pointed a gun at his face and said, "This should be familiar."

"When that happened and I walked out, I walked out immediately after that. I was so upset. I was so angry," Jean recalls.

Hempstead police charged Volonakis with criminal possession of a firearm and second-degree menacing.

But community members and leaders gathered in Hempstead Monday to argue that those charges are not enough.

"If someone pulled out a weapon on me or anybody, they would expect that that person would be facing some type of felony," said Nassau Legislature Minority Leader Kevan Abrahrams.

While Hempstead police say they don't believe the incident was racially motivated, others don't agree.

News 12 attempted to get comment from the manager's home Monday, and while it appeared someone was home, no one answered the door.

The dealership declined to comment, but said Volanakis is no longer working there.

The DA's office says it is investigating to see if additional charges are warranted.
