Competitors from across New York state attempted to break the champagne sabering world record Friday in Baldwin, but fell just short.
Frank Esposito, general manager at the Coral House in Baldwin, won the competition by slicing 62 bottles of champagne open in one minute.
He is the former world record holder for the event.
The current champion is Ashrita Furman, who opened 66 bottles in one minute using a saber.
While slicing open a bottle of champagne with a saber undoubtedly looks cool, it can be dangerous. Rob Richards, of Sutton House restaurant, says he cut himself during competition, but was still able to beat his friend.
"God willing, I'll have a lot of things going on that are positive [in 2017], so no complaints," says Richards. "And the hand will heal."
