A Northport man accused of hitting two Suffolk County police officers with a stolen car is facing upgraded charges.

A grand jury handed down a 28-count indictment against Chad Morizsan, of Northport, and his accused accomplice and nephew, Nicholas Franzone. The indictment includes upgraded charges of first-degree assault and assault on a police officer.

Authorities say officers Nicholas Guerrero and Heriberto Lugo were trying to stop Morizsan in Huntington when he ran them down. Officer Guerrero suffered a serious head injury and is still in a medically-induced coma.

Morizsan was on probation for petty larceny at the time of the incident. During the getaway, prosecutors say the suspects hit another vehicle, ditched the Ford Explorer, then carjacked a Toyota Camry from a woman in Commack and stole her purse.

Morizsan and Franzone were arrested at Target in Central Islip, where prosecutors say they bought a TV using a stolen credit card.

During their arraignment Tuesday, prosecutors told the judge that the evidence against Moriszan and Franzone is both significant and strong. District Attorney Thomas Spota says some of the crimes were caught on videotape.

The judge set bail at $3 million for Morizsan and $300,000 for Franzone.

The Suffolk PBA says Officer Guerrero faces a long road to recovery.
