A Centereach woman is taking legal action against the Nassau County Police Department over her arrest during a 2024 Legislature hearing.

The suit claims officers arrested the wrong suspect while responding to a report of an unruly person at the hearing on the Mask Transparency Act.

Maria Campanelli says she suffered a traumatic brain injury, bruising and emotional distress following the incident.

The 27-year-old is seeking $60 million in damages, according to the lawsuit.

News 12 is waiting to hear back from Nassau County for comment on the pending litigation.
