An alarming new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that illnesses from ticks, mosquitoes and fleas have tripled over the last 13 years.
Also on the rise is the number of phone calls to the regional Tick-borne Disease Resource Center at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital.
Rebecca Young, a registered nurse at the center, says she received nearly 400 calls in 2016.
“In 2017, I had calls numbering about 800 and now…in 2018, I have twice the number of calls I had at this time last year," says Young.
According to the CDC, more than 640,000 illnesses from those three insects have been reported between 2004 and 2016.
