Doctors say they now believe the Zika virus has been transmitted through sex.
According to doctors, Zika is primarily spread through mosquito bites. However, now health officials confirm it can be sexually transmitted.
Officials say a patient in Texas was infected after having sexual contact with a person who returned from a country where Zika was present.
The virus is being linked to birth defects in newborns, resulting in babies being born with abnormally small heads, resulting in severe developmental issues.
World Health Organization officials declared a public health emergency this week as Zika is now present in at least 24 different countries as it sweeps through Latin America and the Caribbean.
Officials say there have been nine cases in New York, including one in Nassau County and reports of one in Suffolk as well.
The CDC says it will issue safety measures in the coming days on prevention of sexual transmission of Zika virus.
It has already been recommended that pregnant women postpone trips to Latin America and the Caribbean.
