Dozens of Catholic school teachers protested Sunday in front St. Agnes Cathedral in Rockville Centre to demand higher wages.

The teachers have been working without a contract since August. They are asking for a 6.5 percent yearly raise for the next three years. The Diocese of Rockville Centre is currently offering a 1.6 percent raise each year.

Union leaders say that offer is too low, given the concessions teachers have made in other areas.

About 216 teachers are affected by the current contract situation, including ones from Holy Trinity High School in Hicksville, St. John the Baptist High School in West Islip and Bishop McGann-Mercy High School in Riverhead.

A mediator is expected to help with negotiations in December. The diocese has not returned a News 12 request for comment.
