An Amityville man intentionally drove a car through the Sunrise Mall in Massapequa Thursday evening.
The car entered shortly before 7 p.m. through the mall's main entrance, turned left at the center pavilion and exited through the other side, police said. Police said the driver, who sources identified as 19-year-old Dwight Thomas, of Amityville, did not directly injure anyone, but caused more than $60,000 of damage to the mall.
Witnesses said the driver seemed calm during the incident.
"He was just driving like it was funny," said Theresa Schuessler, who was in the mall at the time.
News 12 Long Island reported on Thomas, also known as Dizzy, last year. Thomas was arrested for purse snatching outside the Lindenhurst Village Hall.
Police confirmed they did arrest the driver. He will be charged with reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. More charges are expected.
One person stepped on shattered glass after the car exited the mall and sustained minor injuries.
