Eastbound lanes have been reopened on the Long Island Expressway in Medford following an accident this morning that seriously injured an East End man.

Police say that a 32-year-old Riverhead woman was driving a 2007 Kia eastbound on the Expressway shortly after 6:15 a.m. when her vehicle struck a 2002 Ford van that had pulled over onto the shoulder.

The driver of the Kia was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening. Her passenger, a 33-year-old Riverhead man, was seriously injured.

The van driver, a 49-year-old Nesconset man, was working to change a tire and was not hurt in the crash.

Both vehicles have been impounded for safety checks. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is being urged to contact police at 631-854-8652.
