Car found submerged in Great South Bay; no sign of driver

It's unclear how the car ended up in the bay.

A car was found submerged in water overnight, sparking a massive search effort in Bayport.
Authorities received a 911 report of a vehicle in the Great South Bay just after 1:30 a.m. Sunday. News 12 is told that the car was seen about 50 feet off shore from Gillette Avenue.
Marine units, a police helicopter, emergency services and the fire department were all called in.
News 12 is told that there was no one in the car, and investigators don't believe the driver was ever in the water.
It's unclear how the car ended up in the bay.
The case remains under investigation.
