Calls for safer drinking water in Calverton are finally being answered.
Neighbors situated near Peconic Lake say their only source of water is from a well that Suffolk County says is contaminated with a toxic mix of industrial chemicals.
"Over 50% of the homes in this community had high levels of the toxic chemical called PFAs, highly toxic chemicals that are linked to liver damage and several different types of cancers," says Adrienne Esposito, of Citizens Campaign for the Environment.
The county now says it has secured $5 million from the federal government to hook 98 homes in the community to the public water supply.
Homeowners were also happy to hear that they were finally getting what they have been asking for.
According to the Suffolk County Water Authority, the project to connect the 98 Calverton homes should begin in the summer.
