A junior varsity basketball game between two Long Island schools ended with both teams celebrating together.
Eighth grader Sophia Randazzo, of Patchogue-Medford Middle School, threw a buzzer beater from near half-court making the crowd and her opponents go wild.
"It was kind of weird, I was like 'What?,' but then everyone crowded around and I'm like, OK, this is really cool, a cool memory, something you'll never forget," Randazzo says.
Zareah Rivero, an eighth grader for Longwood Middle School, ran in on the hug with the opposing teams' hug, happy to see her opponent score her last basket of the season.
"It's good sportsmanship, we need that in basketball to play well and support other teams no matter what," Rivero said.
The final score was 42-35 with Longwood winning, but it was a win for everyone.
Coaches for both teams say it shows how sports can create positive memories.
"I have never seen anything like that in sports in my life, so I am so amazingly proud to be part of a program and to have another program that was so great to experience such a moment together," says Patchogue-Medford JV girls basketball coach Ashley Monzillo.
All of the girls, including the coaches, say that it was a game they will never forget.
