Some LI charities worry tax overhaul will mean less donations
Some Long island charities say they are worried the federal tax code will have a damaging impact on charitable donations.
They worry that changes in the federal tax code will result in fewer people itemizing their deductions.
"The fear is, if you lose the itemized deduction of charities, people are not going to give money to charities," says economic analyst Marty Cantor.
Paul Pachter, who heads Long Island Cares, calls the tax code change "unfortunate" but has faith that people give because they care.
"I don't think we can make a determination right at this time that there are going to be less donations made to local charities. I think it is mostly speculation," says Pachter.
Kevin Laplatney, of Obstacle Athletics in Deer Park, says he will continue being charitable. The company recently held a fundraiser where it raised $2,500 to buy warm clothes for a homeless shelter nearby.
"We are giving people. Tax incentives were never really a reason for doing this. We just want to help local people in need. We are all just middle class people and still have a warm heart and want to help people," he says.
