The Town of Smithtown is going digital with parking passes for beaches and parks.

The measure was approved by the town board at a Tuesday meeting.

Traditional windshield stickers will now be replaced by a "Smart Pass."

The new online system will involve a $5 processing fee per vehicle and will be tied to your license plate.

There will be an option to renew annually, which the town says is more convenient for residents.

Town officials also say the system will strengthen enforcement through plate recognition, noting that stickers were often shared and that led to parking shortages.

The new method will be rolled out by the end of April.

Registration fees will be waived for veterans and seniors 65 and older.
