Long Island's largest town is adding new support for a lawsuit aimed at stopping the Army Corps of Engineers' plans to dump dredged materials in the Long Island Sound.
The plan involves taking 53 million cubic yards of sludge from Connecticut and dumping it into an eastern portion of the Sound over the next 30 years.
"We can't afford to dump our waste and make our bodies of water garbage cans," says Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine. "That day is over."
New York state is already suing the Environmental Protection Agency, and Monday the Town of Brookhaven announced that it would file papers to support the state in that lawsuit.
Brookhaven officials and Long Island environmentalists say most of the sludge is contaminated with industrial waste that would set back efforts to clean up the Sound.
"Just in the last five years we have had whales, we have dolphins return to Long Island Sound, and we want that to continue," says Anthony Graves.
