There is a battle brewing at Brookhaven Town Hall between the Republican-dominated town board and Democratic Supervisor Brian Foley. The Republicans say Foley is spending money on a public relations firm without their knowledge. Councilman Tim Mazzei (R-Blue Point) and three of his fellow board members say Foley has the firm Zimmerman Edelson on a $3,500 monthly retainer and hasn?t disclosed what the money is being used for. They say Foley has paid more that $430,000 so far to the firm, headed by National Democratic Committee member Robert Zimmerman. "Right now the town supervisor can spend over half a million dollars on his politically connected buddies without getting the OK of the town board,? says Mazzei.Foley, however, says the Republicans approved the payments. ?They knew all about it not only that, they also at the time had approved the resolutions that appropriated and transferred the money's for the payment of that firm,? says Foley. Foley says most of the money went for commercials to inform the public about their Community Preservation Fund. He says Republicans are trying to seize the office of public information from his control as part of a power grab. Republicans say that any public relations work should be done in house by Foley's public information officer.Foley does admit that Zimmerman Edelson has contributed about $7,300 to his campaigns over the years.
