Volunteers claim that the Brookhaven Town Animal Shelter is suffering from feces-filled cages, urine-soaked blankets and not enough staff.
They say they have gone to town meetings, wrote emails and letters, but have not gotten a response from anyone in the town.
Volunteer Kathy O'Donell says the shelter is understaffed and overwhelmed. Some days, she says the dogs don't get medication.
Shelter officials, however, shared the results of their most recent municipal shelter inspection report with News 12. It said that the shelter passed all areas of inspection.
When News 12 read the results of the report to the volunteers, they laughed as if it was a joke.
Animal shelter officials also sent News 12 a report from the Suffolk County Department of Health. It was made on Monday about a follow-up inspection concerning an alleged sewage backup issue. The report says no violation was found.
The volunteers say they will be voicing their concerns again at an upcoming town meeting.
