The Town of Brookhaven is taking action and cleaning up a derelict piece of property near William Floyd High School after two teenagers were allegedly sexually assaulted.
Authorities say a 14-year-old William Floyd student was sexually abused by a man posing as a cop, at an abandoned trailer on the property last week. Another student was assaulted on her way to school Monday, yards away from the property, police say.
The town started boarding up the house and removing debris from the property, at the owner?s expense. The town says it began getting complaints about the property in November and had already ordered the owner to clean up the property when the first attack happened.
Other William Floyd students say they?re not surprised at the incidents and that the town should have cleaned up the property a long time ago. However, they say it?s a step in the right direction.
Civil activists complain such incidents happen because Mastic and Shirley are treated as dumping grounds for sex offenders and other deviants.
The town says it will expedite the permit process to demolish the house on the property and hopefully build a Dunkin? Donuts in its place.
