Bronx-born Joann Diaz made history on Wednesday by ascending the FDNY ranks becoming the first Latina lieutenant.
Diaz was among 60 lieutenants to cross the stage at the FDNY Promotions Ceremony in Brooklyn.
As she crossed the stage, "I heard the screams of my family, my brothers, who I've grown to love very much. My babies. It's an honor. I feel very lucky," Diaz says. "It's a proud moment as a Latina. I hope that me being here today inspires other women as well as Latinas to do the same."
The FDNY says it employs 118 women and highlights its initiative in becoming a more diverse department.
