Governor Eliot Spitzer (D-NY) revealed his thoughts on Long Island's most pressing energy issues at a news conference Thursday.
Spitzer says he has not made a decision on the Broadwater Energy project, perhaps the most prominent energy proposal facing the Island. Broadwater plans to build a liquefied natural gas (LNG) barge nine miles off the coast of Wading River. Preliminary studies concluded the project would have little or no environmental impact on the Long Island Sound, but a new federal report says otherwise.
"We will look at this carefully and down the road I will make a determination," Spitzer said about the latest report. A Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) investigation into Broadwater's economic impact on ratepayers will be released in April.
Spitzer's view on the proposed National Grid takeover of KeySpan finishes as a close runner-up to the Broadwater barge. Despite a Public Service Commission (PSC) report stating the merger would not be in the public's best interest, Spitzer sees potential under certain conditions.
"It may be a merger that is likely to happen," Spitzer added.
