Residents in Bridgehampton are asking Southampton Town for safety improvements to protect pedestrians.

Published reports say there have been multiple pedestrians injured or killed trying to cross Main Street in Bridgehampton.

The Bridgehampton Citizen Advisory Committee is demanding that Southampton Town assign police officers and that the state Department of Transportation install more lighted crosswalks to improve pedestrian safety.

"We think that [traffic control officers] are not enough to slow down the traffic. They don't have the authority to give moving violation tickets," says Nancy Walter-Yvertes, of the Bridgehampton CAC.

Assemblyman Fred Thiele and state Sen. Ken LaValle secured a $700,000 grant to make safety improvements in the area. Some concepts being considered include the installation of lighted crosswalks and a pedestrian traffic light. Town supervisor Jay Schneiderman says he's taking a balanced approach to the proposals.

"We're trying to find the right solution that allows traffic to flow at a reasonable pace, but also allows pedestrians to get across the road safely," says Schneiderman.

No decisions have been made regarding more police officers in the area.

The Southampton traffic safety director says pedestrians not using the marked crosswalks also continues to be a safety problem in Bridgehampton.
