Brian Martin, of Roosevelt, charged with assault, criminal use of firearm after allegedly shooting wife

A Roosevelt woman is in critical but stable condition after allegedly being shot in the face by her husband.

Nassau police say the alleged gunman, Brian Martin, 36, shot his wife once in the face during an argument inside their William Street home. His wife suffered a broken cheekbone and jawbone.

The couple are both corrections officers at Rikers Island.

Martin has been charged with assault and criminal use of a firearm.

In court today, Martin's attorney told News 12 that his client had confessed to his wife that he was seeing another woman, sparking a heated argument. The attorney claims that Martin's wife grabbed his service gun and they were struggling when the gun went off, striking her in the face.

Martin does not have a criminal record. He has been a corrections officer since 2006, and was also in the Coast Guard for four years.

The Corrections Captains Union says it stands by both Martin and his wife.
