License plate readers will be installed across Brentwood after a rash of gang-related killings.
As News 12 Long Island has reported, Suffolk police say gang violence is to blame for the murders of five teenagers, including two high school girls last month.
Now, 50 license plate readers are slated for Brentwood, Central Islip and Bay Shore. Officials say the devices will be placed in strategic locations, but did not specify where.
However, not everyone is in favor of the plan. The New York Civil Liberties Union wants rules to protect the privacy of innocent drivers. Brentwood Assemblyman Philip Ramos says privacy will not be an issue since the readers will only be used for crimes, not minor infractions.
Officials say they do not know exactly when the readers will be set up in the Brentwood area. License plate readers are already mounted on some Suffolk police vehicles, and the readers are also used in other communities such as Freeport.
