With early results showing his school district's budget failing by four votes, the superintendent of the Brentwood School District dropped a bombshell Wednesday.
Michael Cohen has decided to step down as the district's superintendent. He made the announcement to News 12 Long Island before he even told his bosses. Cohen says it was a wonderful public service opportunity and that he is not sure what he will do next.
Cohen said a combination of various issues prompted his decision to leave. He did admit that part of the reason he resigned was because he was discouraged by the results of Tuesday's school budget election.
Unofficial results show 921 people voted against Brentwood's proposed budget while 917 voted in favor of it. Of 16 votes that needed to be validated, only nine are valid so far. Election officials said the votes came from people who have not previously voted in an election. Officials will have to make sure those votes came from people who actually live in Brentwood. Cohen said the results probably won?t be ready until Monday.
The $276 million budget would have raised taxes 4.5 percent from last year.
Out of 124 school districts across the Island, released figures had seven budgets being rejected by voters. In Nassau County, school budget proposals in Roosevelt and Westbury were rejected. The five budgets in Suffolk County schools that were rejected are Brentwood, Fire Island, Mount Sinai, Patchogue-Medford and Wyandanch.
