Supporters of breast cancer research gathered in Mastic Monday to pressure political leaders into taking action on a bill they say has gone nowhere.
The bill was introduced a year ago and would set aside more than $100 million to create regional cancer research centers, including one on Long Island. Officials say the Republican majority in Congress has yet to take action on the bill, which currently has 246 co-sponsors.
Advocates on Long Island are demanding federal funding after a state Department of Health study found no environmental link to elevated cancer rates in seven Suffolk communities. They say more research must be done to find the cause of the so-called ?cancer clusters? in Coram, East Setauket, Miller Place, Mt. Sinai, Port Jefferson Station, Sound Beach and Port Jefferson.
