Two Centereach boys living with a rare genetic spinal disease will now be able to see more of the world around them.
On Thursday, the family of Nicholas and Tyler Accardi received a conversion van.
Both boys have spinal muscular atrophy, or SMA, and rely on their power chairs to get around.
Previously, they could only travel to school because they didn't have a vehicle that was big enough for their wheelchairs.
"Now we are a completely independent family. We are very excited, and I can't wait to take them out," said mother Toniann Accardi.
The conversion van took years of fundraising from family and friends, as well as help from Long Island Home Builders Care volunteers.
"It took quite an amazing effort from a lot of incredible people to pull this project off," says Mike Souto.
