Police are investigating after the body of a newborn was discovered on a Hempstead street Saturday.
A resident made the gruesome discovery while walking his dog on Sunset Drive. Police say someone dumped the newborn out in the bitter cold in the middle of the street. Detectives say it also appears from the condition of the body that probably one or more vehicles had run over the body in the last day or two.
The sex of the baby could not yet be determined and police don?t know if the baby was stillborn or alive at birth. Investigators are looking to nearby hospitals to try to track down the mother of the child. Anyone with information is asked to call Nassau Crime Stoppers at 800-244-TIPS.
